Picking up steam

What are we doing this Sunday? Do you really have to ask, dear reader? With awards season in full swing, we will be enjoying our second favorite awards show, the Golden Globes! Now, as much as we at 3pies4rolls love the Oscars (and it's a LOT), the Golden Globes do hold a special place in our heart, being Oscar's wacky, fun, slightly drunk cousin. Let's face it, the GGs give us awards broken up by drama and comedy (honoring some of the more fun roles that Oscar generally overlooks), boozy acceptance speeches, and Ricky Gervais. What's not to like?

But this year the Hollywood Foreign Press Association went a little crazy on us.

don't even get me started on the tv noms. No Community or Friday Night Lights?? Freaking Glee? Parks and Rec only getting one nom (for Amy Poehler)?? And Breaking Bad, which I don't even watch, getting totally snubbed for best drama. I can't even begin to understand what the hell is up with that TV comedy category. The fact that shows like Community, Parks and Recreation, and Louie get completely snubbed and dramedies like Enlightened/shows that used to be good and then completely fell apart like Glee get in kind of renders this whole award pointless. Also, the way they lump the supporting categories to include series, mini-series, and movies prevents a lot of people who turn in solid performances week after week from getting recognized against the showier movie/miniseries (see Mildred Pierce, Too Big to Fail, etc.).

Ok, phew, now that I've done that rant, let's get on to movies. Let's start with the big ones. I'm actually kind of ok with the dramatic movie nominations (I mean, yawn, War Horse, but whatever), and believe that, with the inclusion of The Artist, that could be our final list of Best Picture noms for the Oscars. The Artist should take the comedy or musical category in a walk (it's really helped by the separation between drama and comedy- nothing can hold a candle to it or star Jean Dujardin), but I want to take issue with the inclusion of My Week With Marilyn as a comedy. Apparently the HFPA has the worst sense of humor ever (which all signs point to, and then they go and keep having Ricky Gervais host, so there's gotta be something). While that shouldn't affect the picture race, it does mean that Kristen Wiig and Charlize Theron will likely be snubbed in their fabulous (and far more category appropriate) performances against Michelle Williams's Marilyn Monroe. Somehow the HFPA also managed to ignore the always amazing Michael Shannon for Actor in a drama as well, instead trying to make sure that Leo and Ryan Gosling attend the show. And the complete omission of Melancholia from anything just makes me feel, well, melancholy. Ah well. We can always hope Oscar will have a bit more sense.

But by far the most stunning snub, though, is Melissa McCarthy for Bridesmaids. This had Golden Globe written all over it. Even though the Supporting category is not broken up by comedy or drama, McCarthy seemed like she should be a shoo-in. She's being talked about as a relatively likely nominee for the much more uppity Oscars, you would think the cool drunk cousin would be all about it. It makes my brain hurt.

Well, that rant doesn't mean that I won't be in front of the tv with my favorite co-bloggers, hanging on every one of Ricky Gervais's insults. and, as my sister so perfectly put it, "in general though i have to say that it's pretty refereshing that the winners aren't so obvious as they were during (yawn) last year's oscar race. MOVIES!"

indeed, MOVIES!!!!

Awards season is in full swing...

...and all we can say is "eh." Is anyone else just pretty bored by the movies and subsequent awards this year? I mean, don't get me wrong, there have been some really good movies this year. I will have no trouble making a top ten (other than my normal issue of keeping it to ten). but there have been very few that i have died for, that i've just walked out of the theater having been completely enraptured. i normally have at least a couple of those experiences over a movie season, but I'm running out of things to watch. which is issue number one.

Issue number two is that there is no suspense. you've already heard my rant about The Social Network. I can't see any movie beating it at the Oscars, and that just bums me out. But it's also the acting categories. Can anyone beat Firth or Portman? I don't think so. (a different question than should anyone beat Firth or Portman- I was the biggest Firth supporter of all last year because he was phenomenal in A Single Man, and, while he's great in The King's Speech, I do believe Franco's better; and don't even get me started on Michelle Williams). Do Bale and Melissa Leo have it wrapped up for the supporting awards? The only big category where there's really suspense is Original Screenplay, because, frankly, The Social Network can only win for Adapted.

Does any of this mean that we weren't glued to the TV for the Golden Globes (freaking out over a technical glitch that delayed our watching) or that I won't be getting my ass up at 5:30am tomorrow to see the Oscar nominations announced live? No. But I'm not a normal movie watcher.

As far as the Golden Globes went, I think my sister put it perfectly in an e-mail to the 3pies4rolls crew: "have you two been seeing all of the stuff people have been writing about how ricky gervais went too far at the GGs? i wonder what it says about me that instead of thinking that i kinda thought he was boring." Agreed, Nanc. It was just all a bit yawnsville.

There were some highlights. my two favorite parts of the evening:

But, I mean, even the fashion was boring:

le sigh... I suppose this just means the Oscars will seem that much more awesome by comparison. Keeping my fingers crossed for some twists!

big week in movie news!

This week has given us nominations two of the big pre-Oscar awards shows: The Golden Globes and The Screen Actors Guild Awards. These have actually made me happier than some of the other early awards results (see my little rant on The Social Network running away with most of the early awards season prizes), but mostly because it raises my expectations for movies I haven't seen yet, which could definitely go badly (Up in the Air anyone?)

Both sets of nominations continued to set up The King's Speech as my most anticipated movie for the rest of the year. As anyone who has read this blog before knows, we kind of died for Colin Firth's performance last year in A Single Man. I thought he was robbed of all deserved awards because of the idea (that I agree with) that Jeff Bridges should have an Oscar (of course, it should have come for Lebowski, but what are you gonna do?). But Firth has quickly become the frontrunner due to the rave reviews he's getting for TKS. Hopefully that one doesn't let me down (it is the theme of movies in 2010).

Also getting lots of recognition are Black Swan and The Fighter, which are two others that I'm super excited for (can people forget that Christian Bale is kind of a douchebag and remember that he's an awesome actor? I guess we'll see, because it seems like he's emerging as the frontrunner in the supporting category).

To quote ms. kt on a couple of other important points related to the Golden Globes:

1) the kids are all right being classified as a comedy is, well, a comedy. see what i did there??!!
2) yes, "burlesque" contains music, henceforward, one could call it a "musical." but that seems rash and silly, don't you agree?

Our feelings on the kids are all right have been made pretty clear, but I'm honestly offended by the idea that it's a comedy. Maybe if your definition of funny is being miserable. but mine's not.

I do love the inclusion of Emma Stone for Easy A, because that is a movie that IS a comedy. A light-hearted romp even. Totally enjoyable time at the movies, and she's charming as hell, so I like seeing her get recognized. Plus, we get a Johnny Depp vs. Johnny Depp showdown, so that should be a good time. And, of course, Ricky Gervais!!!

Pretty happy about the tv nominations all around (though Matthew Morrison? Really? I used to love Glee as much as the next girl, and am super happy about Chris Colfer and Jane Lynch, but honestly, that show's been in a downward spiral, and Mr. Schuster is one of the worst things about it), though apparently I don't watch as much tv as I used to. Sigh...

Is it time already?

To start thinking about Awards Show Season 2011??? Apparently the Golden Globes thought so, and decided to lock up Mr. Gervais for another year (maybe they were worried about the Oscars trying to steal him away and avoid another travesty like this past year). Either way, whoohoo, more Ricky Gervais!

My new favorite red carpet-er...

the ADORABLE Lea Michele!

Last night at the Grammys:

In my top two at the SAGs:

Starting it off at the Golden Globes:

Well done, Rachel, well done.

i'm a big fan of this

So, Kim has already excellently broken down the most important red carpet info on last Sunday's Golden Globes. One person whose outfit we loved but was not on the list was Nancy's spirit animal, Meryl Streep. Turns out Christina Hendricks wasn't the only one wearing a dress by a Project Runway alum. Meryl's outfit was courtesy of fan favorite (and constant sleeper) Chris March. Love it.

Golden Globes!!!

So, we at 3pies4rolls headquarters were really loving the Golden Globes this year (seriously, why do we let anyone not named Ricky Gervais or Neil Patrick Harris host anything, ever?). That is, until James Cameron won Best Director. And proceeded to give this year's "I'm the king of the world speech":

(that's right, he just spoke Na'vi. it was not a joke. you can just jump ahead to 1:00 if you don't want to listen to him talk more than you have to).
In other news, I'm very concerned about the health of James Cameron's 5th wife Suzy Amis.

Personally, Avatar winning Best Picture didn't bother me nearly as much as Cameron winning. I mean, it shouldn't have, but i did love the movie. But Cameron beating Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker is just wrong. I don't think it necessarily predicts an Oscar win, though, if you look at the different audiences. The Golden Globes are selected by about 100 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, whereas the Academy is several thousands. Also, consider the business that Avatar did overseas compared to any of the other films, especially The Hurt Locker. Thus, I am keeping the faith.

Other moments of note:
  • Speeches of the night go to Mo'nique and Robert Downey Jr. My feelings for RDJ are clear, but I never thought I could find Mo'Nique so damn charming.
  • Anything Ricky Gervais said, most notably: "I like a drink as much as the next guy ... Unless the next guy is Mel Gibson." Only complaint is how little he was actually on stage.
  • I still maintain that Colin Firth gave the best male performance of the year. But I do love Jeff Bridges, and think it's wrong that he's never won an Oscar, so i guess I should just resign myself to the fact that he's going to win.
  • Sandra Bullock is quite the charmer.
  • Best moment of the red carpet:

  • I actually really loved Drew Barrymore's speech as well.
  • Critics Choice Awards: Christoph Waltz's acceptance speech is all about people's "choices" that got him there. His Golden Globes speech is all about his world, globe, and Tarantino's gravitational pull. Now taking bets on what combo of "oscar" or "academy" will show up on March 7th. Because, duh, he's gonna win.
  • Red carpet boob award goes to Christina Hendricks. Sorry Mariah Carey.
  • Loooooooove that Glee won. Absolutely did not love that Jane Lynch didn't.
  • I did enjoy Mike Tyson's appearance with the Hangover cast.
  • And, finally, your "oh jesus" fashion moment of the night:

for your golden globes watching pleasure

The Golden Globes are on tonight!!! Awards show season is in full swing. Clearly there are many other better options than this (feel free to add them in the comments), especially because this comes from well known cultural commentator Moviefone, but still, an entertaining place to start. Moviefone's Golden Globes drinking game:

- Drink every time a celebrity is seen on camera taking a drink.

- Drink every time host Ricky Gervais uses a really British word, like "chap," "crikey" or "bloody."

- Make the person to your left drink every time Ricky Gervais makes a fat joke about himself.

- Drink if Ricky Gervais references 'Pants on the Ground' in his monologue. And put your pants on the ground.

- Drink three times (twice for Conan, once for Jay) if Ricky Gervais snarks on NBC's late-night wars in his monologue. Drink only once if his joke seems tamed down for the censors at NBC.

- Drink every time someone can't read the teleprompter.

- Every time two presenters engage in awkward scripted banter, drink from your neighbor's drink.

- Drink every time a winner is announced and you picked wrong in your Golden Globes pool.

- Drink every time a winner thanks God. (Optional: Make the sign of the cross.)

- Chug the rest of your drink with every mention of 'The Hangover.'

- Yell "Basterds!" every time there's a shot of Quentin Tarantino.

- If a celebrity is caught in the bathroom when his/her name is called (a la Christine Lahti), drink enough to have to go to the bathroom.

- Drink for two (i.e., twice) if a winner forgets to thank his or her significant other.

- If the producers show a clip of Brad Pitt in 'Inglourious Basterds' and then pan to Jennifer Aniston, you must drunk-text an ex.

- Chug every time someone references Mariah Carey's drunken speech at the Palm Springs Film Festival.

- If James Cameron wins Best Director and yells, "I'm king of the world / Pandora / the Na'vi / all y'all," stand on a piece of furniture (a chair will do) with arms upraised. Then drink something blue.

- If Christoph Waltz wins Best Supporting Actor for 'Inglourious Basterds,' chug a glass of milk.

- Every time the camera pans to Zach Galifianakis, call the person next to you a "rah-tard." The last person to do so has to take a shot of Jagermeister.

- Drink and then sing the refrain of 'Don't Stop Believin' whenever 'Glee' wins an award.

- If Meryl Streep wins:

-- Take a shot for every actress she mentions lovingly by name in her category.

-- Double shot for anyone she forgets.

-- Chug a pint of beer if after mentioning actresses, she circles back to herself and gloats that she's the best of them all.

- If Sandra Bullock wins:

-- Quote a line from one of her movies. Whoever can't think of one has to take a shot.

keep 'em coming!

82 days until the most wonderful day of the year: Oscar Day. Of course, second to Oscar Day in awards show season are the Golden Globes, which, have we mentioned are hosted this year by Ricky Gervais??? We had? just thought I'd check.

Anyhoo, the Golden Globe nominations were announced today! The Globes bring us the chance for TV and movie stars to hang out together. With booze!

Up in the Air leads in number of nominations, but there's our friend The Hurt Locker again. Unless Precious can regain its momentum from earlier in the season with a couple wins (and given that people apparently hate Nine [making it the 3rd best movie with the number 9 in it this year (see District 9 and 9)]), it looks like it's going to come down to those two movies at the Oscars. Although, who knows with this crazy new 10 nomination format.

Other thoughts:
  • Tobey Maguire? Really?
  • Carey Mulligan is sooooo good in An Education. I really hope she takes that one. The Best Actress categories are actually seeming a little thin to me, not that these aren't good performances (the ones I've seen), but there's just no clear frontrunner. Which, in my opinion, makes it Mulligan. Especially since Meryl Streep is competing against herself.
  • I love that (500) Days of Summer got nominations for both Best Picture (Musical or Comedy) and for Joseph Gordon-Levitt (3pies4rolls dreamboat). Plus, no nomination for Zooey Deschanel, who is the weak link there.
  • Awesome that The Hangover got nominated, but, really, if we're honoring that genre, where was I Love You, Man?
  • Christoph Waltz, Woody Harrelson, and Stanley Tucci have all won so far this season for supporting actor. I've only seen Waltz at this point (he's the absolute best part of that movie), but the other two are supposed to be great as well.
  • REALLY strong year for Animated Features.
  • TrueBlood!
  • We're totally going to have to watch Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore hold hands again.
  • Probably no way that NPH takes the award, especially since they combine series, mini-series, and TV movie for the supporting awards (I know you're trying to save time, GGs, but WTF?), but I'm happy he'll be there.
  • I heart Glee. Jane Lynch winning would be the best thing ever. And on that note, here's a little end of the year love on Glee:

Last year's Globes brought us the finest moment in red carpet history, what will this year's bring??

UPDATE: I can't believe I left this storyline off my list... this has gotta be the first time that ex-spouses have competed against each other, right??? Kathryn Bigelow used to be married to James Cameron!

One more thing to look forward to this coming Awards Show Season

Ricky Gervais will be hosting the Golden Globes! The Golden Globes haven't had a host since 1995, which, let's face it, most of the time we really appreciate, but I'm looking forward to several hours of this:

and this:
