Apparently critics do not agree with me, because it is turning into some what of a rout in awards show season. Today, the New York Film Critics Circle added its name to the list of groups that are falling over themselves to reward the Facebook movie. Don't get me wrong, I really did like it. I thought the screenplay was great, the acting top notch and the story very compelling (plus, an enjoyable trip down memory lane for the days of "the Facebook"). I just hoped for a better year of movies than one where it is the best. But what are you gonna do? Aside from the NYFCC, other groups that have named the Social Network the best movie of the year include:
National Board of Review
African-American Film Critics Association
Boston Society of Film Critics
Los Angeles Film Critics
Washington DC Area Film Critics Association
Indiana Film Critics Awards
Southeastern Film Critics
New York Film Critics Online (different group)
Plus numerous others that have either nominated it or put it as one of the "Top Ten"
(of course, the most prestigious Top Tens have yet to come out. 3pies4rolls will reveal their picks the Sunday before Oscar Day [we don't get the special advance screenings (wait a minute, why the hell not?)]). Good points all around.
I guess I should be happy that it's not a different critically acclaimed movie winning all these awards; one that I actively disliked: The Kids Are All Right. Annette Bening keeps taking home Best Actress trophies (and, yeah, she's great), but MAN i did not enjoy that movie.
In good news, three of my more anticipated movies still to see keep getting honored in lesser ways, so maybe there's hope of a movie I can die for yet. Black Swan, The King's Speech, and The Fighter are all getting great reviews. Keeping my fingers crossed for Colin Firth after he fell victim to "Jeff Bridges is awesome and should have an Oscar" syndrome last year, defeating his unreal performance in A Single Man.
