as if you cared: it's kim's review of "avatar"!

whoa... i'm really eating my words on this one!

top tenable.

as if you cared: it's kim's review of "sherlock holmes"!

fun & well-directed. and, to me, there is NOTHING that rdj can do wrong. nothing!!! he and law have fantastic chemistry. mcadams mostly just looks (really) good.

gives the young victoria a run for best costumes.

honorable mention.

See you next year!!!

Happy New Year, everyone!

Now, I know everyone's getting all excited about those top ten of the year and decade lists, and don't worry, gentle readers, ours are coming, but for some reason we don't get invited to the advance screenings of movies (at least until this baby really takes the blogging world by storm), so we need a little more time. We've got until the Sunday before the Oscars- check the bylaws.

Until then, we'll just keep doing what we do...

as if you cared: it's kim's review of "the young victoria"!

very enjoyable with a SOLID performance by emily blunt. and the costumes? LOVE!!

honorable mention.

as if you cared: it's kim's review of "invictus"!

there's no character to this film; what a bore. freeman is good, but his performance isn't nearly as strong as jeremy renner in the hurt locker or sharlto copley in district 9. (or, i assume, jeff bridges in crazy heart.)

if you want great eastwood/freeman, watch unforgiven and million dollar baby. (well, watch them anyway.)

three stars for a compelling story and damon, who's the best thing here. (and pretty, too!!)

honorable mention.

um, awkward!

for lovers of queen and battlestar galactica

that's totally our demographic, right?

Spoiler warning that if you have not seen and are planning on ever watching BSG, this gives a TON away, as it covers the whole series, so don't watch it.

Also enjoy references to Dr. Horrible and Lost, among others.

they used "empire state of mind"?!?!

i'm bored already.

I mean, are they not even trying anymore?

I don't even know where to begin with the bad ideas involved here.
1) Don't remake The Karate Kid
2) If you do, don't cast Will Smith's kid as the karate kid
3) Wait, you're not really still going forward with this, are you? Okay, if so, PLEASE don't cast Jackie Chan in the Mr. Miyagi role. Somewhere, Pat Morita is crying.
4) Seriously? Nobody's killed this project yet? All right, then at least don't set it in Bejing. I can just see the cultural stereotypes ready to abound.

ahhhh! you've replaced "wax on, wax off" with "take off you're jacket"??? My head is going to explode.

on whatever day of awards show season the SAGs gave to us...

...their nominations (which line up pretty neatly with the Globes).
(this joke's not old yet, right?)

Only a couple of notable differences here- Jeremy Renner getting a best actor nod instead of Tobey Maguire, Emily Blunt getting left out (and Meryl Streep making it in for Julie and Julia) in the Best Actress category, and Diane Kruger replacing Julianne Moore for supporting actress (but seriously, where the hell is Melanie Laurent? She and Christoph Waltz are the best part about Inglorious Basterds). I'm really liking the Cast nominations as well (although I haven't seen Nine, and the reviewers have not been kind). TV awards are separated somewhat differently, so you can analyze them for yourself (thank god we got Charlie Sheen in there, I was worried. Come on SAGs, seriously?). And, yes, we will be seeing Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore hold hands again. Oh, in case you're wondering, I did just make a gagging gesture of putting my finger down my throat. Good times.

Finally, the marvelous Betty White will be getting the Lifetime Achievement Award, so that makes it worth watching by itself.

release the kracken indeed, liam neeson

call me a sucker for an action film, but the new Clash of the Titans looks rad. Apparently Sam Worthington is the new go-to big budget action star, following up Terminator Salvation and Avatar with this. Plus, it's got Liam Neeson as Zeus. What more do you want, people???

Check out the new trailer here.

What's that you say? You want to remember the amazingness of the original? oh, okay:

They may have improved the special effects just a bit since then. Although I'm not sure how you improve upon that pegasus.

as if you cared: it's kim's review of "fantastic mr. fox"!

"you're going to die with love."
*carinna tarvin

i did.

i've already decided to name my next cat kristofferson fox.

i'm in LOVE with this film. and i'd like to thank both wes anderson and eric chase anderson for taking the time to create some of the coolest stuff in the biz.

and so it begins.

TOP TEN, INDEED!!!

as if you cared: it's kim's review of "up in the air"!

here is a short list of movies that are about 150x better than up in the air (in no particular order): the hurt locker, inglourious basterds, district 9, the cove and fantastic mr. fox. in other words, get a job, national board of review, hollywood foreign press association, american film institute and every other critic out there. (i mean, 90 goddamned percent???!!!)

the acting:
for great clooney, see fantastic mr. fox.
anna kendrick? please. not interested.
vera farmiga is the best thing about UITA; but save your money and instead watch her in the departed, one of the best films of the DECADE.

in summation: the only reason to see this film is to try and decipher what all the fuss is about. if you couldn't care less about the fuss, skip it. FOR SURE.

keep 'em coming!

82 days until the most wonderful day of the year: Oscar Day. Of course, second to Oscar Day in awards show season are the Golden Globes, which, have we mentioned are hosted this year by Ricky Gervais??? We had? just thought I'd check.

Anyhoo, the Golden Globe nominations were announced today! The Globes bring us the chance for TV and movie stars to hang out together. With booze!

Up in the Air leads in number of nominations, but there's our friend The Hurt Locker again. Unless Precious can regain its momentum from earlier in the season with a couple wins (and given that people apparently hate Nine [making it the 3rd best movie with the number 9 in it this year (see District 9 and 9)]), it looks like it's going to come down to those two movies at the Oscars. Although, who knows with this crazy new 10 nomination format.

Other thoughts:
  • Tobey Maguire? Really?
  • Carey Mulligan is sooooo good in An Education. I really hope she takes that one. The Best Actress categories are actually seeming a little thin to me, not that these aren't good performances (the ones I've seen), but there's just no clear frontrunner. Which, in my opinion, makes it Mulligan. Especially since Meryl Streep is competing against herself.
  • I love that (500) Days of Summer got nominations for both Best Picture (Musical or Comedy) and for Joseph Gordon-Levitt (3pies4rolls dreamboat). Plus, no nomination for Zooey Deschanel, who is the weak link there.
  • Awesome that The Hangover got nominated, but, really, if we're honoring that genre, where was I Love You, Man?
  • Christoph Waltz, Woody Harrelson, and Stanley Tucci have all won so far this season for supporting actor. I've only seen Waltz at this point (he's the absolute best part of that movie), but the other two are supposed to be great as well.
  • REALLY strong year for Animated Features.
  • TrueBlood!
  • We're totally going to have to watch Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore hold hands again.
  • Probably no way that NPH takes the award, especially since they combine series, mini-series, and TV movie for the supporting awards (I know you're trying to save time, GGs, but WTF?), but I'm happy he'll be there.
  • I heart Glee. Jane Lynch winning would be the best thing ever. And on that note, here's a little end of the year love on Glee:

Last year's Globes brought us the finest moment in red carpet history, what will this year's bring??

UPDATE: I can't believe I left this storyline off my list... this has gotta be the first time that ex-spouses have competed against each other, right??? Kathryn Bigelow used to be married to James Cameron!

and on the 150th day of awards season, the AFI gave to us...

oh, how i LOVE a top ten!!

whoa, this kind of blows my mind

Disney: resourceful? or lazy?

gaining momentum

The Hurt Locker was named the best film of the year by both the LA and New York film critics, giving it the early frontrunner status at The Awards Circuit. Considering how early in the year it came out and how much that normally hurts a movie, this has got to make the filmmakers very very happy.
plus, I'm totally okay with it, it's REALLY good.

and, the other bonus, it also boosts Kathryn Bigelow's shot at being the first woman to win Best Director (only 3 have ever been nominated), not to mention the fact that it could make the woman who gave us Point Break an Oscar winning director. Don't hate that one bit.

well, somebody has a mortgage!

man, this has me crackin up. also, is it just me or does he look totally wasted?

for old times sake:

Friday, December 4, 2009

on the second day of awards show season, the NBR gave to us...

A really, really awesome list of movies. The National Board of Review announced its awards yesterday. It's definitely early for predictions to mean much, but the last two NBR best film winners were Slumdog Millionaire and No Country For Old Men (read: the last two Best Picture winners at the Oscars). So pretty good news for Up in the Air.

Some things I love about this list:
  • It just makes me want to see Up in the Air more
  • I've already seen 7 of its 10 best movies (usually lists at this time of year just make me feel really behind in my movie watching [not that I'm not])
  • The Cove winning best documentary (not sure if you guys know this, but we LOVE that movie. Might have mentioned it once or twice before)
  • Carey Mulligan winning Best Actress for An Education (seriously, she's phenomenal)
  • Harrelson!
  • My already overwhelming desire to see Invictus (inspirational sports movie that's also supposed to be good??? be still my heart) is only increased with the award for Eastwood for direction and Freeman for acting.
Sure, there are some omissions (I haven't seen Precious, but from everything I hear it/Mo'Nique should be on here [also, here's an interesting article talking about that very issue]. Even stranger since Mo'Nique lost to dark horse Anna Kendrick for Up in the Air. Yup, that's the same Anna Kendrick known mostly only to 14 year old girls for her role as Jessica in the Twilight movies. Maybe we can't escape them). But I feel pretty great about this list.

NPH takes on childhood classics, makes everything better

So my favorite part about this is that apparently it is the handiwork of CBS, not some random blogger with extra time on their hands. this is the kind of christmas cross promotion i can get behind. get ready to hear Frosty talk about his porn collection...

Thanks to Claire for the link!

A reminder this holiday (I'm looking at you, President Obama)

if anyone other than Kim, Nancy, or I was reading the blog back then (pretty sure you weren't), you will remember this from back in March-ish. but it felt ripe for a re-post.

Tuesday, December 1, 2009

luke wilson, come back to us!!!

remember this?

so what the hell is going on here?

how hot is he in the royal tenenbaums, btdubbs???

as if you cared: it's kim's review of "precious: based on the novel "push" by sapphire"!

i've spent a week trying to craft this review. i got nothin'. so here's the deal: precious is an incredibly honorable, yet incredibly flawed film with a performance by mo'nique that will STOP YOUR HEART. she's a revelation and has all but locked down the oscar for best supporting actress. (sorry, julienne moore, it is, once again, not your year.)

yes, gabourey sidibe is good. really good. yes, mariah carey is good, too. and lenny kravitz: not bad. lee daniel's direction is sloppy and unfocused, but i can think of no one better to tackle sapphire's material. want to really blow your hair back? read the book.

top ten.

why hello there, awards show season

The nominations for the Independent Spirit Awards were announced today. No gigantic shockers with Precious, Amreeka, (500) Days of Summer, The Last Station, and Sin Nombre making up the best feature category (although somehow Anvil got nominated for best documentary and The Cove didn't). And I love Flight of the Conchords as much as the next girl, but really? Jemaine Clement for Best Supporting Actor in Gentlemen Broncos? Seriously?

I mean, I might think that was awesome, if not for this
