holy crazy
this interview is the most uncomfortable thing I've ever seen
republicans heart movies
so apparently the National Review has created a list of the 25 Best Conservative Movies of All Time (not kidding). You can't see the full list on their website because, well, they're jerks. Lucky for us The Same Dame just published it with commentary.
just for good measure, here's the list (with Same Dame commentary):
1. The Lives of Others (2007) - I guess it's anti-communist, but is really about the culture of surveillance.
2. The Incredibles (2004) - What?
3. Metropolitan (1990) - Never seen it.
4. Forrest Gump (1994) - I can see this one.
5. 300 (2007) - Definitely conservative—homophobic homoeroticism, with bad writing and shitty filmmaking to cap it off!
6. Groundhog Day (1993) - Really? This is a political film?
7. The Pursuit of Happyness (2006) - OK, I guess it's about a guy who works hard, and all libruls are lazy deadbeats. But what about leaching off that homeless shelter?
8. Juno (2007) - Because only conservatives choose not to have an abortion. By all means, take it!
9. Blast from the Past (1999) - One of the greatest films of any kind from the last 25 years.
10. Ghostbusters (1984) Seriously, what the fuck? Is Ramis one of the great conservative filmmakers now?
11. Lord of the Rings (2001, 2002, 2003) - You knew they were going to go for this one, gay wizard and all.
12. The Dark Knight (2008) - Batman IS George W. Bush.
13. Braveheart (1995) - A terrorist insurgency in an invaded country!
14. A Simple Plan (1998) - If it's a morality tale, it must be conservative!
15. Red Dawn (1984) - Clearly a masterpiece.
16. Master and Commander (2003) - Definitely portrays a British conservative ideal, but not really a political movie.
17. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe (2005) - I still think this is a mediocre bore, however you paint it.
18. The Edge (1997) - Hrm.
19. We Were Soldiers (2002) - They love Mel Gibson here.
20. Gattaca (1997) - Those crazy liberals won't stop until they create a master race!
21. Heartbreak Ridge (1986) - Never seen it, but sound like a conservative masterpiece.
22. Brazil (1985) - C'mon! This should be number one! It so elegantly distills conservative ideology.
23. United 93 (2006) - Kindly go fuck yourselves, NR.
24. Team American: World Police (2004) - I can see it—too bad it's not very funny.
25. Gran Torino (2008) - I've said it before and I'll say it again: Huh?

shyma-la-ma-la-ma is at it again!

what's with shyma-la-ma-la-ma's intital all-white cast for the last airbender? i'm stumped.
plus, given the suckiness of shyma-la-ma-la-ma's last two pictures (lady in the water and the happening [nominated for four, FOUR, razzies!!]), there's no reason to expect much from TLA. i mean we're still gonna see it. i'm just saying.

push: based on the novel by sapphire

there's a ton of buzz about this film, including, yes, (very) early oscar talk for mo'nique. push, directed by lee daniels, swept sundance this year, winning the audience award, the grand jury prize and a special jury prize for acting.
i just have one question: this is a comedy, right?! (christ.)

Official Top Ten Bylaws (amended February 2nd, 2009)
*in order for a movie to be eligible for a particular year's top 10 list, it must have been released in that year. this means that a movie that comes out in a certain year, but before the date our top 10s are due, it can only be eligible for the year in which it was released (like alpha dog). exceptions are as follows:
a) if a movie is released in a particular year, but we are not able to see it in seattle until january 1, then it can be included on the previous year's top 10 (eg, pan's labyrinth was released in august 2006, but we couldn't see it until january 2007). this is where the critics come in handy - if they're reviewing it in a particular year, we can include it.
b) if the film was released in the previous year, but we were not able to see it because it wasn't released in the theaters or on video in seattle until the following year, then we can include it on the following year's top 10 (eg, come early morning came out in november 2006, but not here; and it doesn't come out on video until march 2007).
c) if a movie plays for less than two weeks in seattle, and then doesn't come out on video until the following year, we can include it on the following year's top 10 (eg, a guide to recognizing your saints. i mean, come on, we have lives here. a movie that's in the theater for less than two weeks ... what the hell? put that shit on your 2007 list, nanc!).
d) if one of us in a part of the world where we can see a movie in time for that year's top 10, fine, put that sucker on there. (eg, if i were to visit NY, i probably could've seen come early morning in like may or something, thus i could've put it on my 2006 top 10. but, nanc, since you weren't in NY, it's eligible for your 2007 list.)
*top 10s are due on february 1
amendment 1: top 10s are due exactly one week before the oscars, effective february 2, 2009
*any film is eligible for the top 10
*only one tie may be used for every ten films. additional ties will result in the loss of a "numbered slot" (eg, if your list has 3 ties, you only get to number your list to 8)
*as many "honorable mentions" as we damn well please can be included on the list
*these rules are subject to change at the complete whim and mood of nancy, kt, and jessica
we, kt, nancy and jess, declare that the making of the top 10 (including, but not limited to, viewing the movies, eating the popcorn, having the oscar party and discussing the nuances) will be FUCKING FUN and to that end promise to not take ourselves or our list too damn seriously.

Dad's take: IMDB goofs

"So I'm watching Groundhog Day, as I usually do, on Groundhog Day and it hits me--something's wrong; what is it? Well, in Punxsutawney on Feb 2, the sun doesn't come up until 7:28 in the morning (see http://www.sunrisesunset.com/
That's when I realize what geekdom is really all about,; it's epitomized by this "goof": "When Bill Murray gives the young couple Wrestlemania tickets, the girl, after calming down, responds with "We're going to be in Pittsburgh anyways." This movie came out in 1993, so they were either referring to Wrestlemania IX or Wrestlemania X, which were held in Las Vegas and New York City respectively, so there's no way they could have been Wrestlemania tickets. Either way, Wrestlemania's never been held in Pittsburgh."
Oh well. Love, Dad"
