and, Emmys? Get a job. Glee gets 12 nominations for a shitty season and Community gets 0? Then again, you're the same award that only nominated The Wire twice over 5 years and yet gave around 40 nominations to Two and a Half Men. So why am I even bothering?
Man, could the VMA's have been more yawnsville? They really made me miss old interrupting Kanye.
The highlight of the evening was BY FAR Lady Gaga's red-carpet walk with former members of the military who had been discharged or resigned in protest due to Don't Ask, Don't Tell. Once I find video of her interview I'll put it up here, but it was definitely the most awesome moment.
Normally the VMA's at least deliver on performances (hello Beyonce last year or gaga and Elton John), but even those were letdowns this year (I mean, beiber? Taylor Swift singing a song about Kanye that I kept hoping was a joke (no, really)? linkin park?). The stage was awesome, and well used by Usher and Kanye (who, yes, is self-important enough to sing a song about douchebags), but otherwise there was not much to talk about.
The one performance I did really enjoy was Eminem's (next to Kanye, that guy looks downright humble and self-reflective these days, doesn't he?):
Usher's performance (MTV is not letting me embed here, but here's the link) was my other favorite, because at least it was entertaining to watch, even if I do find him pretty boring overall (and we have him to blame for unleashing the biebs on us).
and speaking of horrifying things unleashed on us (cough, cough, ke$ha, cough, cough), this happened:
By the way, our Emmy coverage was rather absent this year, as it coincided with vacation time (what do you want from us?), so it deserves a mention as well. While, again, not a ton to write home about, at least that show had a killer opening (plus Jimmy Fallon, who always makes me happy):
that NPH would be amazing at the Emmys? Our love affair with Neil Patrick Harris has been well documented, but it was nice to see other people give him some love on stage, including Jon Stewart and member of last year's five host debacle, Survivor host Jeff Probst.
Here are a couple of my favorite moments:
side note: living in a household that loves sports almost as much as it loves pop culture, i missed part of the awards due to Sunday night football. Please, tell me what other favorite moments I missed.
and finally, because it won an emmy and I love it, let's relive the opening number from last year's oscars. Just a little over 5 months until Oscar day!!!
First of all, to answer what I am sure is everyone's most pressing question, yes, we will get to find out what happens if NPH wins a best supporting actor emmy while hosting. the only other thing you really need to know is that the emmys love 30 Rock (22 nominations) and Mad Men (16).
This might be my favorite line-up for an award (Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics):
81st Annual Academy Awards- Hugh Jackman Opening Number
A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift of All- Much Worse Things
A Muppets Christmas: Letters to Santa- I Wish I Could Be Santa
Flight of the Conchords: Unnatural Love- Carol Brown
SNL Host: Justin Timberlake- Motherlover
The 2008 ESPYs- I Love Sports (Justin Timberlake)
In snubbing news, BSG was left out of every major category and True Blood was almost non-existent. 3pies4rolls favorite Dr. Horrible did sneak in with a very long titled award nomination (Outstanding Special Class- Short-format Live-Action Entertainment Programs). And I don't hate the inclusion of Simon Baker for Outstanding Lead Actor- Drama.

3pies4rolls shared its love letter to NPH when the news first broke that he would be hosting the Emmys. In order to make me love him more, this was his response to the news:
"After having had such a hoot hosting the Tonys, I was thrilled to get the call about the prime-time Emmys," said Harris, adding that he looks forward to "adding my own voice" to the ceremony: "But which voice to choose? I'm torn between gangsta, foppish Brit, and robot. Really proud of my robot. We'll see what happens on the night."
Looks like the hosting of the Tony's went so well that he's been offered a follow-up at the Emmys! Loyal readers will know that the combination of awards shows and NPH sends our hearts aflutter, leading to the only concern of what to do if he gets nominated (as Barney Stinson always should).
and, because i feel like it, an ode to some of NPH's finest moments:
