yes, folks, it's finally time. With one week to Oscar Day, here come the Top Tens!
Jessica's Top Ten Movies of 2009
1) The Cove
The Cove grabbed my top spot early and was never even approached. A truly phenomenal movie- gripping, shocking, emotional, stressful... it really just blew me away like no other movie this year. It also had my favorite description: "A cross between the Bourne Identity and Flipper."
2) A Single Man
Astonishingly good performance from Colin Firth (I would give him the Oscar), and a surprisingly strong directorial debut from Tom Ford. This movie really stuck with me- I couldn't stop thinking about it for days afterward.
3) (Tie) The Hurt Locker & Inglourious Basterds
Two great movies that I just loved, and share the high stress and intensity of The Cove. The Hurt Locker features phenomenal directing from Kathryn Bigelow (PLEASE let her be the first woman to ever win Best Director at the Oscars), as well as great performances from Jeremy Renner and Anthony Mackie. Added bonus, one of my favorites, Ralph Fiennes, may just have had a few minutes in his busy schedule to stop by. Inglourious Basterds had me on the edge of my seat every time Christophe Waltz was onscreen. Great performances all around, Tarantino's always fascinating and unique story-telling, plus, who doesn't love a good nazi revenge fantasy?
4) Avatar (IMAX 3D)
Yes, James Cameron annoys the crap out me. Yes, I don't want this movie to win Best Picture, and yes, there is some of that great old white people come in and lead the native people who couldn't do it by themselves storyline. But holy crap if it wasn't one of the best experiences I had at the movies this year, especially at the IMAX. Weaknesses in screenplay, but visually stunning, hugely entertaining, and Zoe Saldana is good enough in my book to have warranted a Best Actress nomination.
5) I Love You, Man
The funniest movie of the year, hands down. I just want to hang out with Paul Rudd and Jason Segel. Redefined the bromance.
6) Pray the Devil Back to Hell
Absolutely incredible story. One of the most powerful movies of the year. If you don't know the amazing story about what the women of Liberia did during their country's civil war, you REALLY need to see this (you need to see it even if you do).
7) An Education
Beautiful, entertaining, great performances, and the coming out of Carey Mulligan, who could not be cuter or more charming.
8) Sin Nombre
Amazing movie that no one is talking about. Realistic and subtle. Edgar Flores is fantastic.
9) Star Trek
Now THAT is how you make an entertaining blockbuster movie. I have never been a Star Trek person (growing up firmly in the Star Wars camp), but this movie completely grabbed me. Soooooooo entertaining. Perfectly cast. Great time at the theater.
10) Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father
I don't even have the words for this movie. The most emotionally affecting movie I've seen in a long time. Hugely personal story for the filmmaker, and draws you in to the incredible drama. Be prepared for a good cry.
If only it was a top 15:
Up, Zombieland, The Damned United, The Messenger, District 9
Honorable Mentions:
(500) Days of Summer, Adam, Adventureland, Away We Go, The Blind Side, Bright Star, Capitalism: A Love Story, Coraline, Crazy Heart, Every Little Step, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Gomorrah, Good Hair, Goodbye Solo, The Hangover, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Harvard Beats Yale 29-29, Herb and Dorothy, In the Loop, Julie and Julia, The Last Station, Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire, The Princess and the Frog, The Proposal, Sherlock Holmes, Signs, State of Play, Taken, This American Life Live!, This Is It, Valentino: The Last Emperor, The Young Victoria
The reason there are so many movies above: 78 eligible films seen
Awards, etc.
Performances of the Year: Colin Firth, A Single Man and Carey Mulligan, An Education
Best onscreen chemistry: Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law in Sherlock Holmes. Beat any romantic couple this year. Who knew Law could not only hold his own against RDJ, but actually play off him and make them both better?
Dude who had a really good year: Woody Harrelson. Loved every minute of him (impressively spanning genres) in Zombieland, 2012, and The Messenger (although he shared the amazingness in that one with Ben Foster)
Movie that Can Suck It: Up in the Air. To be fair, I didn't hate this movie when I saw it. But I certainly didn't like it. And I'm offended that it is even in the conversation as one of the best movies of the year. Yes, it's timely, but what was the point? What was it trying to say? What the hell is wrong with your characters and their supposed "development"? But mostly I'm offended that anyone would ever call this movie a "delightful new romantic comedy." None of those words describes that movie (for a movie it does describe see: (500) Days of Summer).
Best Movie Based on a Book I Love: Where the Wild Things Are (even if it wasn't as great as I wanted it to be)
Worst Movie Based on a Book I Love: The Lovely Bones. Hands down the worst movie I saw this year. I mean, by far. And I saw the Transformers sequel. There is just no way to fully describe how terrible this movie is. Tucci is great, but it doesn't even matter because of how much of a mess the rest of the movie is. Peter Jackson, you let me down.
Best movie with the number "9" in it: Two of my biggest disappoints of the year were "9" and "Nine", both of which should have been amazing. So this award goes easily to "District 9"
The Mr. Creepers Award for being "That Creepy Guy": Mark Strong, showing his creepy off in Sherlock Holmes and The Young Victoria
Most Important Lesson Learned From a Movie: Don't let your 17-year-old daughter go on a completely reasonable sounding trip to Paris with her friends because she will be kidnapped, forced to become addicted to drugs, and sold into high level prostitution. It's true, I learned it from Taken.
Best Thing About the Awards Show Season So Far: (tie) Ricky Gervais and the cast of Glee, specifically Lea Michelle's outfits. Let's just hope Oscar noticed and invites both.
Worst Thing About Awards Show Season So Far: This
Best Thing About the Movies This Year: As always, watching them with nanc, kt, and frozen junior mints! and, of course, blogging for you fine people! Thanks for reading!

I love movie people with time on their hands
While I still maintain that Avatar is more of a Ferngully remake than a Pocahontas one, this is really incredible. Well done, magical movie mashup guy, well done indeed...
(apparently other people have tried the same thing with Ferngully, but have been less successful...)

Poorly run Oscar campaigns

Why are you doing this to us, Hurt Locker? This is just embarrassing. Apparently, one of the producers, Nicolas Chartier, sent an e-mail to a huge number of Academy members asking them to vote for his film and not the "$500M" movie. Which, okay, yeah, we agree with you, but you need to be a little more careful who you send that to. Because apparently your list included producers who worked on some of the other 9 movies that are nominated for Best Picture (8 of which did not cost $500 million to make). Which, shockingly, is now bringing the backlash. After they began hearing about the e-mail from outraged reps for studios with other best picture contenders, the academy forced Chartier to issue an apology and e-mail it to each person who received the plea he sent last week. Not only was the e-mail in violation of Academy rules and etiquette, it's just plain dumb.
However, ballots are due back next Tuesday, the 2nd, so presumably the backlash might be coming a little late. Either way, the plot for Best Picture thickens...
10 days until Oscar Day!

Official Top Ten Bylaws: Amended for Clarity February 2010
Since I've been getting some questions on when these babies are coming out, it seemed a good time to go over the bylaws. So, with the release of our Top Ten lists only 5 days away (is that a clock I hear ticking down to Oscar Day???), I present to you the official bylaws of Nancy, Kim, and Jessica's Top Ten Lists:
*in order for a movie to be eligible for a particular year's top 10 list, it must have been released in that year. exceptions are as follows:
a) if a movie is released somewhere before December 31st in a particular year, but we are not able to see it in seattle until the following year (but before our Top Tens are due), then it can be included on the previous year's top 10 (eg, a movie released in august 2009, that we couldn't see it until january 2010 is eligible for 2009). this is where the critics come in handy - if they're reviewing it in a particular year, we can include it.
b) if the film was released in the previous year, but we were not able to see it because it wasn't released in the theaters or on video in seattle until the following year, then we can include it on the following year's top 10 (eg, a movie that came out in november 2009 in select areas, but not in Seattle, and doesn't come out on video until march 2010 (which is after Top Tens are due) is eligible for 2010 lists).
c) if a movie plays for less than two weeks in seattle, and then doesn't come out on video until the following year, we can include it on the following year's top 10 (eg, a guide to recognizing your saints. i mean, come on, we have lives here. a movie that's in the theater for less than two weeks ... what the hell?).
d) if one of us in a part of the world where we can see a movie in time for that year's top 10, fine, put that sucker on there. (eg, if one of us were to visit NY or attend a film festival, we would probably have been able to see movies that the others couldn't. thus a movie that is eligible in a given year for one person's top ten might not be the same for another. the same movie could theoretically appear on different top ten lists in different years).
These rules can be most simply thought of as "If it's Oscar eligible for a particular year and we had the ability to see it before our Top Tens are due, then it is eligible in that year."
*top 10s are due on february 1
amendment 1: top 10s are due exactly one week before the oscars, effective february 2, 2009
*any film is eligible for the top 10
*only one tie may be used for every ten films. additional ties will result in the loss of a "numbered slot" (eg, if your list has 3 ties, you only get to number your list to 8)
*as many "honorable mentions" as we damn well please can be included on the list
*these rules are subject to change at the complete whim and mood of nancy, kt, and jessica
we, kt, nancy and jess, declare that the making of the top 10 (including, but not limited to, viewing the movies, eating the popcorn, watching the Oscars and discussing the nuances) will be FUCKING FUN and to that end promise to not take ourselves or our list too damn seriously.

wanna watch a jackass look like a jackass by desperately trying not to come off as a jackass?
take it away james cameron!
you have to go HERE to watch the video cause they're a bunch of copyright fascists but here's a taste of the douchebaggery: "And look, for myself, I have already got an Oscar. I've got a couple of them, you know." oh DO you mr. king of the world? where WILL you ever keep another one? you may even have to, like, clean off a shelf or something. what a BOTHER!
asshole.

I know I might be in the minority in this...
...but the news that the Oscars are cutting performances by the Best Song nominees really bums me out. Yes, two of the songs I would not know (having not seen Nine on principle and not seen Paris 36 because who the hell has), but I still enjoy a good musical number. And seeing as we're without Hugh Jackman (that's right, I'm going to link to his Oscar opening number again, because, DAMN, I love it), we probably won't have many song and dance routines in other parts of the show. Though Alec Baldwin may surprise me. Plus, let's face it, "The Weary Kind" is amazing. Take it away Ryan Bingham performance (that we will not be seeing at the Oscars).
Also, I need to provide a little shout out for the two songs nominated from The Princess and the Frog, because I really kind of loved that movie. And it would be nice for people other than me and the 12 others who saw it in theaters to hear them.

happy birthday, blog: nancy's favorite post!
this is hard call because after looking back through the past year i was reminded of all of the awesomeness that has been recorded here by your faithful 3pies4rollers (nice work ladies!)!
but after much toil and trouble my final decision came down to the fact that no one can quite capture the hilarity of scaring the crap out of our youth like my sister can. to see for yourself check out this post wherein jess recounts the seemingly child-appropriate terrors that traumatized her as a kid. i'm particularly fond of the section (see below) where she takes on those psychos at Disney who thought it was a good idea to include a LSD-induced elephant nightmare into an otherwise kid-friendly Dumbo (well, that's if you consider jive talking crows kid-friendly...but i digress!). here's a little snapshot to wet your whistle, do yourself a favor and check out the whole post!
"fairly certain nothing I was ever told as a child dissuaded me from drinking alcohol more than that video. The elephant made of elephant heads (around 2:18)??? pretty sure i could have lived my whole life without ever seeing that."
**also, pls consider helping a girl(s) out and do this thing from today's earlier post!**
(p.s., for those who haven't already, a blogiversary is a great day to become a "follower"! Don't worry, there's no kool-aid to drink, you just need to go to the right hand side of the page and click "follow," all you need is a google account! Thanks to all of our lovely readers!)

yes, that's right, i'm cheating. I have TWO favorite posts. I gotta recognize kim's reviewing ability, by highlighting this gem from back in August, when she correctly predicted Jeremy Renner's Oscar nomination (not to mention calling out the fantastic directing of nominee Kathryn Bigelow). She knows what she's talking about, people!
And secondly, nobody knows me like my sister, and the combination Venn/Vin Diagram has gotta get a shout out! As we know, I do love a venn diagram...
Happy birthday, 3pies4rolls, if we could afford it, we would get you this birthday cake:

How can you not be rooting for these guys??
The first 15 seconds of this (right after Jeremy Renner heard his nomination) are about the most charming thing I've seen...
Nanc covered the most important things from the announcements, and I totally agree that it was a bit yawnsville (especially at 5:30 in the morning, thanks a lot Oscars). I mean, as nanc said, we all know who is going to win the supporting actor categories, could we get a few interesting nominations?? I liked that Maggie Gyllenhaal made it in, but what about Melanie Laurent?? Anthony Mackie? We know they're not going to win (Christoph Waltz is preparing his "I attended the 'Academy' of Quentin Tarantino" speech right now), but it could have spiced things up a bit.
UPDATE: There are a lot of other very charming reactions out there as well. My favorite? Mr. Colin Firth: "I thought I was managing my expectations, but on hearing the news I discovered new and unfamiliar vocal tones. Perhaps I should do another musical."

a bit yawnsville right?

i mean don't get me wrong...i'm SUPER excited for oscar day (duh)...but alls i'm sayin is that the academy continued in the yawny tradition of this year's awards shows by providing only two surprises this morning when they announced their noms.
the two shocking (!!!) surprises:
1. so maggie gyllenhaal (in crazy heart) beat out juliane moore (in a single man) for best supporting actress. good for her. i mean personally i liked single man better than crazy heart but maggie was actually undeniably good in that movie where she held her own against the mighty jeff bridges. the thing is, who gives a crap? i mean is anybody gonna beat mo'nique? um, no.
2. in other news disctrict 9 got nominated for a best picture award which totally RULES cause that movie is super awesome and not your typical academy flare so i guess i have to stop bitchin and give em the deserved props for that one. also, the ten noms for best picture (check out below!) thing makes this the only category where it's really anybody's guess (tho i'm still probably going to put my money on watching james cameron speak na'vi.) frankly, while that would annoy the crap outta me, i'll pretty much be happy as long as that crapbucket up in the air doesn't win. get a job reitman!

Staying up to date on the Oscar race...
We love us some Awards Circuit for staying on top of the Oscar race (despite their terrible layout, please, hire a webpage designer) (oh yeah, and you still have Nine getting a best picture nod despite the critical bashing? come on), but this new chart (linked to because of the awesome interactive quality of it) from Entertainment Weekly is a pretty fantastic visual representation of what's happened so far. It will be changing a lot as of tomorrow! Yay Oscar noms!

and, on that note, congratulations to Kathryn Bigelow on her DGA win! This definitely helps put her back in front in the Best Director category (only 6 directors in the last 61 years have not gone on to repeat at the Oscars after winning at the DGAs), thus trying to save us from Cameron speaking Na'vi (well, at least preventing it from happening in two different speeches). She also became the first woman to ever win the award.

15 hours until Oscar nominations...
but to hold you over until that we have the Razzies!! The official presentation of the winners for worst "achievements" in film will take place the day before Oscar day (March 6th), so it's only appropriate the nominations are released the day before the only event that could get me, Nancy, and Kim all up before 6 am.

While the Razzie noms contain the standard recognition of Eddie Murphy and John Travolta, we at 3pies4rolls are in an uproar over the "snubbing" of The Lovely Bones. Seriously, we see A LOT of movies in a year (including several that show up for Razzie nods), and there is no doubt in our minds what the worst film of the year is (although, in all fairness, we did not see Old Dogs).
Two important things to watch for:

Two important things to watch for:
- Can Sandra Bullock pull off a year in which she wins Worst Actress for one film (All About Steve) at the Razzies and Best Actress for another (The Blind Side) at the Oscars? We're pulling for you, Sandy!
- In the very special worst of the decade categories, who will be "victorious" in the aforementioned Travolta vs. Murphy battle??? Or will Rob Schneider pull out the upset?
