As if you needed to be more charmed...

The Artist has a blooper reel. Which pretty much looks like it could just be more of the actual film.

damn, I love that movie

how incredibly badly do you want to be at this table?

My favorite Oscar nomination reaction (thus far)

Martin Scorcese:

"I am deeply honored to have been nominated by the Academy for my work on Hugo. Every picture is a challenge, and this one – where I was working with 3D, HD and Sacha Baron Cohen for the first time – was no exception. It’s a wonderful feeling to know that you’ve been recognized by the people in your industry. I congratulate my fellow nominees. It’s an impressive list, and I’m in excellent company."

REALLY strong point about Borat, sir.

Oscar Nominations!

Raise your hand if you were up at 5:30 this morning to see the live announcement of the Oscar nominations! (why am I always the only one with my hand raised?)

The field is now set for our favorite holiday of the year. The official countdown can now begin! Just a little over a month until Oscar Day. So what happened this morning? Let's get into it...

How about we start with the awesome: Melissa McCarthy got nominated for Bridesmaids! That seemed like a surefire Golden Globe nomination, and then she was snubbed so I was a little worried. While Oscar almost always goes serious in the lead actor categories, it does have a bit of a soft spot for comedic performances in the supporting categories (see Marisa Tomei for My Cousin Vinny). If nothing else, it's just nice to see her actually get the attention of a nomination. Let's go ahead and pull out that picture again, shall we?

In other awesome news, one of my favorite movies of the year (and thus far pretty overlooked in awards season) got some love in the form of a Supporting Actor nod for Nick Nolte for Warrior. Seriously, if you haven't seen that movie yet, take the time to do so. It's not just for inspirational sports movie lovers, I promise. Of course, it doesn't really matter, because Christopher Plummer is as close to a sure thing as you can get (and rightfully so), but I'm glad that movie got some appreciation.

Now, of course, there were some terrible things too, most notably the snubbing of Michael Fassbender. The man turned in 4 strong performances (in 3 of my favorite movies of the year), and is just stupid good in Shame. There's no other way to describe it. Leaving him off is just wrong. I love Gary Oldman about 10x more than the next girl, and I hate that he's never been nominated for an Oscar, but Fassbender deserves it way more. I can't speak to the other surprise nominee, Demian Bichir, having not yet seen his movie, but I would also throw out Pitt in a second for Fassbender to be nominated. One thing's for sure, this category will not approach the heretofore unseen levels of hotness of its corresponding Golden Globes category (Clooney, Pitt, DiCaprio, Fassbender, and Gosling. just wow.)

I did not create this assortment, that picture of Pitt would definitely be the last one I would choose to enlarge, but oh well.

In smaller disappointments, Melancholia continued to be completely snubbed, Drive was absolutely ignored (most notably Albert Brooks), Jessica Chastain got a nod for her least interesting performance of the year (and there were a lot to choose from), and we probably don't get to see what Tilda Swinton would wear to the Oscars. Sigh.

One of the biggest surprises of the day was all the love for a movie currently sitting with 48% approval on Rotten Tomatoes, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. We here at 3pies4rolls haven't seen it yet, but it seems like a bit of an "F you" from Oscar to critics. We'll let you know what we think once we've seen it, it's hard to get up in arms about an unknown (unless its name is War Horse). With the new nominating rules, most people were expecting 7 nominees (there are now between 5 and 10 best picture nominees and a movie has to pass a certain threshold of number one votes in order to get nominated), so having 9 make it in was a surprise. And while I kind of want to give Tree of Life the middle finger, I know there were enough people who loved it that its inclusion doesn't really surprise me.

Now just keep your fingers crossed in the hopes that with only two nominees for Best Song, we'll get a chance to see Jason Segel perform "Man or Muppet" live, and that The Artist continues its quest to charm the socks off every single person in the world. And if you're still bummed about the Michael Fassbender snub (as I am) I find it really helps to just look at pictures of Michael Fassbender:

feeling better...

almost there...

and we're good!

as if she wasn't completely awesome, weird, talented, interesting & inspiring enough...

... mother monster, lady gaga, announced thursday that she is launching her born this way foundation at harvard university in late february. the foundation will "explore the best ways to reach youth and create a new culture of kindness, bravery, acceptance and empowerment." SO. FUCKING. COOL.

for more lady gaga radness, check out the video message that she emailed to toronto teen activist, jacques st. pierre, in september. she's decked in sea foam and sincerity.

put your claws up: you already know that gaga received a horde of grammy nominations, including album of the year, but did you know that she's received a GLAAD media award nom for outstanding music artist? she did.

anyone else...

... totally adore this?

i wanna wear that: golden globes edition

dresses! dresses! dresses! dresses!

dude, there were some incredible frocks on the red carpet at sunday's golden globes. from angie to tilda to viola to idris and back again, the stars brought it. hard!

but hollywood is a tough business, folks, and only a few are good enough to make it on my best dressed list. (and, no, sarah michelle gellar, you sure as shit aren't one of them. i mean, really? tip dyed?) it's sad, i know; but not everyone's a winner are they, lea michele?

[in the distance, a trumpet sounds]

and then there were five (in no particular order)...

 angelia jolie in atelier versace
(seriously, angie? christ. perfection)

emma stone in lanvin
(that's an eagle belt! AN EAGLE BELT! swoon!)

charlize theron in dior couture
& a cartier headband (c. 1920, museum piece)

michelle williams in jason wu

the stunning idris elba (with his globe for best actor, "luther")
in a double-breasted suit (designer unknown)

leonardo dicaprio
nicole kidman
diane lane
octavia spencer
tilda swinton (once again in haider ackermann)
sofia vergara (best mermaid gown of the night!)

congratulations, stars! keep it up for the sags & oscars, k? K?!

i wanna wear that: michelle williams

she never gets it wrong. ever. (no, you're right: she definitely missed the mark in valentino resort at last year's golden globes.) and here she is getting it right, yet again, in karl lagerfeld for chanel at thursday's critics's choice awards.

swoon.

note: this has received über-mixed reviews, but for me, elizabeth olsen's emilio pucci is a close second.

these are a few of my favorite things...

Bowie and Making fun of Tebow's love of baby Jesus? YES PLEASE!

p.s. holy shit that dude can sing!

i wanna wear that: ginnifer goodwin

listen, i don't really know what ginnifer goodwin is good for. i mean, "big love" gave me the creeps; and i have it on good authority that, while entertaining, "once upon a time" is really, really bad. that said, this young lady knows how to rock a pixie haircut and the red carpet.

case in point: she wow'd at last night's people's choice awards in a ridiculously bright and insanely fabulous roksanda ilincic. this is exactly how you dress for an awards show that's, let's be honest, kinda meaningless. it's fun, yet chic, yet whimsical, yet classic.

well fucking played, ginnifer. like, whoa.

in other, unexpected news: the usually poor-postured miley cyrus showed up last night looking unusually-fresh and UNLIKE a 45-year old in a spring/summer 2012 dress by david koma! it's a post-holiday miracle!

Picking up steam

What are we doing this Sunday? Do you really have to ask, dear reader? With awards season in full swing, we will be enjoying our second favorite awards show, the Golden Globes! Now, as much as we at 3pies4rolls love the Oscars (and it's a LOT), the Golden Globes do hold a special place in our heart, being Oscar's wacky, fun, slightly drunk cousin. Let's face it, the GGs give us awards broken up by drama and comedy (honoring some of the more fun roles that Oscar generally overlooks), boozy acceptance speeches, and Ricky Gervais. What's not to like?

But this year the Hollywood Foreign Press Association went a little crazy on us.

don't even get me started on the tv noms. No Community or Friday Night Lights?? Freaking Glee? Parks and Rec only getting one nom (for Amy Poehler)?? And Breaking Bad, which I don't even watch, getting totally snubbed for best drama. I can't even begin to understand what the hell is up with that TV comedy category. The fact that shows like Community, Parks and Recreation, and Louie get completely snubbed and dramedies like Enlightened/shows that used to be good and then completely fell apart like Glee get in kind of renders this whole award pointless. Also, the way they lump the supporting categories to include series, mini-series, and movies prevents a lot of people who turn in solid performances week after week from getting recognized against the showier movie/miniseries (see Mildred Pierce, Too Big to Fail, etc.).

Ok, phew, now that I've done that rant, let's get on to movies. Let's start with the big ones. I'm actually kind of ok with the dramatic movie nominations (I mean, yawn, War Horse, but whatever), and believe that, with the inclusion of The Artist, that could be our final list of Best Picture noms for the Oscars. The Artist should take the comedy or musical category in a walk (it's really helped by the separation between drama and comedy- nothing can hold a candle to it or star Jean Dujardin), but I want to take issue with the inclusion of My Week With Marilyn as a comedy. Apparently the HFPA has the worst sense of humor ever (which all signs point to, and then they go and keep having Ricky Gervais host, so there's gotta be something). While that shouldn't affect the picture race, it does mean that Kristen Wiig and Charlize Theron will likely be snubbed in their fabulous (and far more category appropriate) performances against Michelle Williams's Marilyn Monroe. Somehow the HFPA also managed to ignore the always amazing Michael Shannon for Actor in a drama as well, instead trying to make sure that Leo and Ryan Gosling attend the show. And the complete omission of Melancholia from anything just makes me feel, well, melancholy. Ah well. We can always hope Oscar will have a bit more sense.

But by far the most stunning snub, though, is Melissa McCarthy for Bridesmaids. This had Golden Globe written all over it. Even though the Supporting category is not broken up by comedy or drama, McCarthy seemed like she should be a shoo-in. She's being talked about as a relatively likely nominee for the much more uppity Oscars, you would think the cool drunk cousin would be all about it. It makes my brain hurt.

Well, that rant doesn't mean that I won't be in front of the tv with my favorite co-bloggers, hanging on every one of Ricky Gervais's insults. and, as my sister so perfectly put it, "in general though i have to say that it's pretty refereshing that the winners aren't so obvious as they were during (yawn) last year's oscar race. MOVIES!"

indeed, MOVIES!!!!

i like you now, giuliana rancic.

man, i used to really not like e!'s giuliana rancic. she was always super annoying when interviewing celebs on the red carpet and she wouldn't shut up about about her freaking "the apprentice"-winning husband.

however, i'm really starting to come around. rancic has handled her public battle with breast cancer with grace, humor, style and moxie. for example, she told people, "i don't give two shits about my breasts." see? moxie.

brava, giuliana. i'll see you on "fashion police." and the red carpet. just don't scare brad and angelina this time, k?

note: i don't know the formatting in this post is so wonky. i blame my lack of computer programming skills. apologies.

Daniel Radcliffe is a true American

I'm choosing to ignore the fact that he claims to have a crush on Katy Perry (gross) and can't name the greatest American president (duh), and instead focus on how he's the most charming man alive:

still can't get over this, though.

i wanna wear that: emma stone

holy shit, emma... WELL PLAYED!

white hot in j. mendel on the national board of review awards red carpet

i just had a heart attack of cuteness!!!!

DOGS!

check out uggie from the artist and cosmo from beginners in the hollywood reporters' "oscar buzz dogs" photo shoot! turns out, there's an actual fan-based push for uggie to receive an oscar nomination for best supporting actor! (they'd also like critic's choice awards nominee andy serkis recognized for his role as ceasar in the rise of the planet of the apes!)

i mean, i know it's kind of ridiculous; but on the other hand, is it any crazier than john goodman NOT being nominated for the big lebowski? WELL, IS IT???

uh oh

who saw that one coming?

i wanna wear that: angelina jolie

this is angelina jolie. and - yawn, i know - she's killing it in head-to-toe salvatore ferragamo (leather!) at last night's new york film critic's circle awards.

now this is what signature style looks like.

per. fec. tion.

most charming thing ever?

is it A. this song.

or B. jason segel's response to it?

what say you dear readers??

happy 30th, duchess kate!

fab dress!

in alice for temperley at the london premier of war horse. gorge.

Fair question

The set of Community asks something that's been on a lot of our minds...

In better news, it appears that Greendale Human Beings fans can relax, because Community will be returning to the air! According to NBC Entertainment President Robert Greenblatt, “Community is coming back. We just had to get some stuff moved around for midseason, but it’s not going anywhere. I can’t say anything about next season yet, but the fact that people think it’s gone … I need to fix that.”

i wanna wear that: charlize theron

it's a rare occasion when i DON'T love what charlize is wearing, so posting about how incredibly incredible she looked at last night's palm springs international film festival awards gala seems a bit redundant, i know.

but i can't help it: her fits-like-a-glove lanvin LBD and simple, yet delicious styling are pure perfection. in the iconic words of rachel zoe, "i. die."

note: charlize and her young adult cast mates won best ensemble at the festival. huzzah!

YEEEEEESSSSSS!

http://www.isbabyoncebornyet.com/

i wanna wear that: elizabeth olsen

as you know, there are two things that i really, really love: fashion & celebrities. so, every now and again, i will post pics of celebs wearing shit that i love.

...i submit to you a new 3pies4rolls feature: i wanna wear that.

we begin with elizabeth olsen, lil' sis of the previously better-known mary-kate & ahley, and the breakout star of critical darling martha, marcy, may, marlene.

she is ROCKIN' the menswear look for her appearance on "live! with kelly" - a wide-leg, high-waisted trouser (my fave pant!), a classic, white oxford shirt and a pair of killer cutler and gross (i think) sunglasses.

LOVE!

Friday, January 6, 2012

this is bérénice bejo.

not only is she the most charming woman alive, she's the star of the most-wonderful, ever-delightful, super-awesome the artist (currently vying for the top spot on my top ten list!).

haven't seen the artist? jesus, what are you waiting for? GO! NOW! and remember bérénice's face - she's about to dazzle us all awards season!

this. rules. hard.

this is the bestest thing that happened to me today!

holy baby jesus, i love michael shannon. like, a lot. he ruled in revolutionary road and my son my son what have ye done, and the missing person made my top ten last year.

this year, he stars in take shelter (will it make our top tens??) and this adorable lil' beaut. love!

wait, is that megan fox & josh duhamel?

hello, peeps. i'm back! and so is our pal, billy crystal, as the host of the 84th academy awards. that's cool and all, but i think the new oscar trailer, "off the grid," is kinda dumb. i mean, seriously? transformers stars and bloody robin williams?

friendly postscript: i'm still bummed about eddie murphy's exit as host. sorry, just sayin'. thanks a lot, brett ratner, you homophobic asshat.
