that joss whedon is always giving his peeps jobs...

fresh from the canceled "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles," Summer Glau, who played batshit crazy River Tam on the absolutely fabulous "Firefly," will be joining the case of Whedon's "Dollhouse" this fall.

River was never my favorite character but i do love how Joss keeps it in the family. i've been meaning to tune into "Dollhouse" and this new addition (plus the fact that two BSG peeps will also be joining the cast at some point) + the fact that i now have DVR may just = a new viewer!

UPDATIER: NPH to the rescue, again...again!

previous 3pies4rolls love letters to NPH have made the point pretty damn clear: as far as we're concerned, this dude is at the tipy top top of the pile of awesome. well, here he goes again. info on NPH's next act of rad courtesy of the LA Times:

"Up next to judge "American Idol"? Neil Patrick Harris.

Fox confirmed that Harris, who will host the Emmys next month and stars in "How I Met Your Mother," sat at the judges' table to help weigh in on the singers during today's Dallas auditions."

i guess that's as good a reason as any to watch idol for the first time in 5 years. sign me up!

as if you cared: it's kim's review of "inglourious basterds"!

super-fun, fantastical revenge-on-nazi-assholes fantasy! tarantino's direction here is superb - particularly the first chapter - he's SO clearly the master of the revenge film. in fact, i experienced such glee at watching the basterds take care of business that i began to question my morality. well done, QT!

the acting? spot on. pitt is good as lt. aldo raine (WAY better than in the curious case of benjamin yawnsville), but christop waltz as col. hans landa and mélanie laurent as shosanna dreyfus are the ones to watch.

"you probably heard we ain't in the prisoner-takin' business; we in the killin' nazis business. and cousin, business is a-boomin'." *lt. aldo raine.

amen. top ten.

you had me at leo

I have no idea what it's about, but with Christopher Nolan and Leonardo DiCaprio, I know I'll be seeing it...

this ain't no "titanic", yo.

does this look like a mash-up of battlefield earth and apocalypto to anyone but me. just sayin'.

(oh, and, no that's not a good thing.)

two men i love, together at last

Last night my future husband (don't tell his wife and kids), Steve Nash, went on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire to win money. Not for himself, he has enough of that, but for The Steve Nash Foundation, so it can continue to do all the fantastic things it does to help make him Dreamy McDreamerson.

That would be enough to make me swoon, but for added benefit they threw in Mo Rocca for the "ask the expert" lifeline (a new development since the days that I watched Millionaire). Watch below and appreciate Mo's take on it

Project Runway is back!

The All-Star challenge (check out the photos of all the looks here) served to remind us that most of the designers feel empty inside without PR, and those whose personalities we didn't like the first time around (cough, cough *jeffrey and santino* cough cough) have only gotten worse. none of the contestants are all that likable, even if at one point you thought they were (I'm looking at you Korto! *spoiler alert, those two links will tell you who won). All that being said, I love this show.

Korto's restaurant dress was unreal:

But Danny V still rules as my favorite post-Jay runway-er (although Christian's right there with him), even though i didn't love his mini-collection, mostly because of this moment when he won my heart:

holy awesome, he used M.I.A.'s "paper planes" IN the trailer!!!!

the official trailer is here!

(see previous post labeled: trailers, michael moore, things that aren't going to suck)

m. night shyma-la-ma-la-ma is coming atcha next summer!

as far as i can tell the most interesting thing about this movie may be when/where/how m. night shyma-la-ma-la-ma will appear, yet again, in one of his own films.

as if you cared: it's kim's review of "district 9"!

district 9 is a film about oppression, hatred, corporate crime and fear. but most importantly, district 9 is about the other; and the extraordinary lengths we, as human beings, will undertake to ensure that the other stays in their place and stays away from us.

district 9 is an allegorical achievement rarely seen on the big screen. yes, it evokes israel/palestine, african apartheid, jim crow, even katrina ... but it does so with such emotionality that the film is able to stand on its own, outside of these present and no-so-past real-life "district 9s".

sharlto copley is ridiculous (-ly good) as van de merwe, and the makeup and visual effects are incredible.

do the right thing, and see this film. top ten.

nerd alert

what does this

plus this

equal?

a nerd lovefest for jessica

speaking of nerd lovefests and jessica...

werner herzog + david lynch = more weird than you can handle?

or a stroke of genius?

honestly, i'm on the fence. i mean i love me some lynch (if you need convincing this should pretty much cover it) but herzog pissed me off during what was a mostly incredible documentary about a crazy dude who thought he could live with the bears (i mean he kept telling everyone in the movie what he thought they should do...isn't that, like, against the rules of documentary making or something?!?!). but let's face it, i will almost definitely see this movie because of that killer cast...how about you?

as if you cared: it's kim's review of "in the loop"!

"difficult difficult lemon difficult." see it.

as if you cared: it's kim's review of "the hurt locker"!

this movie is nothing short of spectacular. the direction (kathryn bigelow is a sure bet for a best director nod), the acting (i'm pretty sure jeremy renner just snagged the year's first best actor nod), the writing, the story. the hurt locker is as suspenseful as it gets, and its treatment of the soldier and the iraq quagmire is an honorable one. top ten, indeed.

as if you cared: it's kim's review of "paper heart"!

is it possible for something to be too charming, too quirky, just too damned cute? yes, it's called paper heart. and it's boring. skip it.

can sandy bullock just pause everything just to hang out with the cast of speed for a day?*

it's a little hit or miss, but I appreciate Tiffany Amber Thiessen (sorry teen stars of my youth, you can't just drop your middle name and expect me to go along with it (I'm looking at YOU, Brian Austin Green!)) responding to Jimmy Fallon's attempts to host a Saved By the Bell reunion. Too bad People Magazine stole some of his thunder...

*by the way, the answer to the above question is yes, yes she can. as long as "the cast of speed" consists of keanu, jeff daniels, ortiz, cameron from ferris bueller, and the worst actor of all time ("yeah there's a bomb, some funny joke!")

wow

so, for those who don't know, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus was Heath Ledger's last film (he died before shooting was finished). It was completed when Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Ferrell stepped in to finish his role (and, in an extremely classy move, donated all of their pay to Heath Ledger's daughter, Matilda).

now the awesomeness comes to the rest of us...

thanks to v-dawg for the alert :)

i'm baaaaaaaaack! and so is michael moore!!

ok, so i know that michael moore drives some people crazy, but those people are just tools. moore's our canary in the coal mine, our court jester, our cinematic gumshoe. plus, i HATE corporate america.

rock on, moore!

awesome book + peter jackson = rad trailer

will it also = rad movie? can't wait to find out.

Today in real life onscreen couples that I like...

Bill and Sookie are getting married
