who doesn't love a little tim burton action?

if you're like us and you think it feels like the release date for tim burton's alice in wonderland is painfully far away...head on over to his official website for a little fix of awesome. the public gallery is rad and, just for the record, i think it's totally worth giving em your junk email account in order to see the private stuff...enjoy!

awesome? or the stuff nightmares are made of? both???

Personally, they had me at "Tim Burton." Something tells me this will be equal parts amazing and creepy.

oh, and also? it's in 3-D. rad.

UPDATE: so, apparently the fascists have taken the video down. We're on it, dear readers! we will find it and put it back up as soon as possible (as long as it doesn't interfere with our vacation)

UPDATE-IER: here's another try, although who knows how long this will be up. Apparently the teaser is being debuted at Comic-Con on Thursday, so it should be up to stay after that...

UPDATE-IEST: hopefully they will let us keep this one...

oh spacey, trying to win me back

so, when I was about 16, i had a thing for kevin spacey (like all teenage girls). we'll just leave it at that. but then he had to go and make pay it forward and k-pax, and we broke up. now here he is, charming me again (although, as a non-twitter user, i have to give this round to dave)

it doesn't take a lot of money to be a philanthropist

I recently read an amazing story about a retired postal worker and librarian who had just become major donors to the National Gallery of Art (when I say major, i mean their names are listed next to the likes of Getty, Mellon, Rockefeller, and IBM). I'd link to the article but 1) it requires a subscription and 2) this is a pop culture and movie blog, so we don't want to make you hurt your eyes, dear readers, with all that "reading." Instead, you should watch this trailer about these two charming people who became giants in the art collecting world with an eye for things that other people didn't spot and the arrangement that her librarian's salary would go toward their living expenses, and his post-office pay would buy art.

the jimmy fallon conundrum

how is that man so funny sometimes (see this and this) and so not funny at others (see late night with jimmy fallon monologues)? I guess it helps if your guest is will arnett.

it also earns points for making me think about the amy poehler/will arnett household, which is about the best thing I can imagine.

i mean, this is freaking amazing:

Emmy Nominations Announced

First of all, to answer what I am sure is everyone's most pressing question, yes, we will get to find out what happens if NPH wins a best supporting actor emmy while hosting. the only other thing you really need to know is that the emmys love 30 Rock (22 nominations) and Mad Men (16).

This might be my favorite line-up for an award (Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics):
  • 81st Annual Academy Awards- Hugh Jackman Opening Number
  • A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift of All- Much Worse Things
  • A Muppets Christmas: Letters to Santa- I Wish I Could Be Santa
  • Flight of the Conchords: Unnatural Love- Carol Brown
  • SNL Host: Justin Timberlake- Motherlover
  • The 2008 ESPYs- I Love Sports (Justin Timberlake)
In snubbing news, BSG was left out of every major category and True Blood was almost non-existent. 3pies4rolls favorite Dr. Horrible did sneak in with a very long titled award nomination (Outstanding Special Class- Short-format Live-Action Entertainment Programs). And I don't hate the inclusion of Simon Baker for Outstanding Lead Actor- Drama.

Find the complete list or search by award, etc. here. Or look at the more user friendly version here

ok, so if you haven't seen the american astronaut...

...then the concept of a space-western-musical may sound a tad bit odd.

however, if you HAVE had the pleasure of seeing the aforementioned awesome film then you will understand why i jumped for joy when i realized that the same dudes are coming out with another movie! what you say? could it be? check it out yo!

for those of you who HAVEN'T seen the so weird it's great film the american astronaut, here are a few clips to perk your interest:

dearest readers,

we here at ethos have a confession to make. in a shocking, and somewhat disturbing, turn of events each one of us has fallen madly, deeply, embarrassingly in movie love with king of the idiot comedies Ryan Reynolds. if this is at all shocking to you, BELIEVE me we were the most surprised of all.

i mean we're talking about this guy:

and this guy:

but, dear readers, as it turns out life has a funny way of surprising the sh*t out of you sometimes and we cannot recommend The Proposal highly enough. if you can't bring yourself to pay to see a romcom, fair enough. but watch out for this dude cause we're pretty damn sure he's our new favorite. here's a little peek:

isn't there a big movie opening today or something?

yes, I read every harry potter book and yes, i loved the crap out of them. as far as i can tell people who don't like the books either: A. never actually picked one up or B. don't know how to read.

and yet, despite my serious HP love, the movies have never quite done it for me (tho of course i'll still jump on the bandwagon and see this latest one. i mean, duh). my favorite potter movie is less of a movie and more of a puppet show...yeah i said PUPPETS. if you don't already know, do yourself a favor and watch:

you're welcome.

UPDATE: NPH to the rescue again!

3pies4rolls shared its love letter to NPH when the news first broke that he would be hosting the Emmys. In order to make me love him more, this was his response to the news:

"After having had such a hoot hosting the Tonys, I was thrilled to get the call about the prime-time Emmys," said Harris, adding that he looks forward to "adding my own voice" to the ceremony: "But which voice to choose? I'm torn between gangsta, foppish Brit, and robot. Really proud of my robot. We'll see what happens on the night."

i mean he's still kind of a schmo for cancelling...

but this is damn funny.

et tu, gosling?

word on the street is that ethos favorite ryan gosling is set to release an album soon.

forgive us if we're not jumping out of seats with nerdy joy. you see, we still haven't recovered from the last time one of our fave actors went musical.

two vids below. and myspace page in force. decide for yourself. good idea? train wreck? for my money the first one is kind of annoying (especially that damn baby) but the second one is super charming (and i do like the whole collaborating with kids thing). also in his favor: i kinda dig that sound and they list one of their influences as "disney haunted mansion." don't hate that.

NPH to the rescue again!

Looks like the hosting of the Tony's went so well that he's been offered a follow-up at the Emmys! Loyal readers will know that the combination of awards shows and NPH sends our hearts aflutter, leading to the only concern of what to do if he gets nominated (as Barney Stinson always should).

and, because i feel like it, an ode to some of NPH's finest moments:

I'm sure I should go into something about the commentary on Twitter's good side (Iran) and bad side (see video above) and our society's need for instant gratification from news, but, really, I just like hearing stephen colbert say "twat"

*thanks to kristen and her unbounded love of jeff goldblum :)

seriously, japan, what?

continuing in the grand tradition of the amazingness that is japanese commercials (see: cage eyes) comes this, because apparently spike jonze and brad pitt have mortgages, too.
